Special Schools

“My first SSF, in 2005, was a turning point for me and all those involved. It changed my teaching and their learning, it changed the way their families thought of them, and, most importantly, it changed the way they thought of themselves.”

- Louisa Hook, Bardwell Special School

SSF welcomes Special Schools and passionately believes that every student should have the chance to thrive and achieve their potential, including those with learning difficulties and disabilities. Therefore we aim to create an inclusive environment where every student’s performance is celebrated.

To make sure this is possible, we provide Special School teachers with extra support and an Inclusive Performance CPD day to share practical advice and make the Festival accessible to performers with needs ranging from mobility issues, sensory impairments, social and behavioural difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties. Special Schools are permitted to use adapted or pared down scripts. Examples of these can be found here.

In 2010, 8% of final sign up to the Festival was from Special Schools and 21% of all students taking part had disabilities or difficulties.
